Reviews of The Rogan Treasures

Here are some reviews of The Rogan Treasures, Book 8 in The Animal Guild Series, that have been posted on Amazon, Goodreads, LibraryThing, PC, or elsewhere.

"
Such a lovely treasure-hunting story! The action was intense and edge-of-your-seat, especially in the second half. The constant foiling of the kids' plans was pretty funny. The ghost section was chilling, as were the evil villains. An excellent adventure read overall." Dec. 28, 2017

"Lots of action adventure and intrigue. The characters are loving and engaging. I've read the whole series and this is just more of the same wonderful storytelling we've come to appreciate and expect from Jennifer Sowle. Another great book for our family library!!!" May 16, 2017

"There's nothing like a good treasure hunt! Add in a road trip, ghosts, a murder mystery and family secrets, and Pepin and Mika are in for a rousing adventure. Not only do they learn more about the Rogan 'witches' and make some surprising new friendsand enemiesthey also learn new things about themselves and what they're capable of when they work together." "This was an exciting treasure hunt with lots of twists, humor and suspense. I totally enjoyed the read. The quirky characters. The roadblocks to their quest for success. The relationships between the kids. And some delightful surprises if you've read other books by this author." May 13, 2017

"The convergence of the animal and human worlds is heating up in the Animal Guild stories! The Rogan and Bower kids are going on a road trip to Nevada and who could have guessed that treasure, and even ghosts, would turn out to be the least of the kids’ problems? Pepin, Mika and their friends are presented with magic and mayhem, spooky mines and haunted hotels, vicious bullies and unexpected friends, small town prejudice and long lost relatives. All the kids have going for them are their courage and their rock-solid loyalty to one another. Both are tested to the limit here, because the stakes are high and the danger is very real for our friends! For me, I found the key word for this entry in the series to be anticipation: over the course of the book a dozen disparate characters converge on an isolated and seemingly inconsequential Nevada town, and the reader eagerly anticipates the meeting of all these strong willed personalities. Expectations are handsomely paid off with masterly crafted scenes mixing adventure, humor and heartfelt emotions—along with plenty of surprises and a slam-bang denouement! Sowle juggles a large cast of characters with aplomb, sure-handedly introducing new members of a sprawling human family (and new bugs!) to the already well-defined animal and human characters. The stage is deftly set for the next installment in this wonderful series, and I for one can’t wait!" May 13, 2017

"Finally, in this worthy sequel to Seven Secrets in the Upper Attic, the worlds of the Rogans and the Animal Guild fully intersect and begin to merge. The Rogan Treasures is another human-centered novel, with the tightly drawn characters, compelling insights, and close-woven story we’ve all come to expect by now from Ms. Sowle. The thing that struck me most about this installment of the Rogan/Animal Guild saga was the author’s humane approach to the subject of good and evil, and to that of human weakness in general. In The Rogan Treasures, bad is bad, . . . but; evil is evil, . . . but. And the “buts” are never excuses (excuses for unacceptable behaviors and attitudes always turn me off). Instead, they are compassionately delineated reasons stemming from upbringing, ignorance, and other correctable human experiences. Evil exists, yes, but there’s an optimistic way of viewing it here that makes it somehow less daunting and brings it more within the human capacity for change.  The other thing I liked most about this novel was how its young characters believably adapted and grew with the turn of each page. I like these kids! Finally, as is her wont, Ms. Sowle sprinkles the plot with new and memorable characters who may (or may not) play a continuing role in the larger saga. I found Gene and Sylvie, the elderly, gay ghost-hunters, an especially welcome addition to the cast. So, in short: The Rogan Treasures is essential reading if you’re already hooked fully into the Animal Guild series. If you’re looking for a place to begin your journey: The Animal Guild (book 1 of the series) or, if you prefer to start from a more human perspective, Seven Secrets in the Upper Attic are the places to begin. Enjoy the ride. It’s definitely a journey worth taking." May 14, 2017
