Thirty days hath September

“Thirty days hath September, April, June and November…”

The other day a young person told me they had never heard of this mnemonic rhyme for remembering the number of days in the months. It got me to thinking about memories in general, and writing memoirs. Everyone should think about writing down some of their “life memories”—good or bad. It’s a way to pass on your stories to your heirs—or if you don’t have any direct heirs, to someone who might be interested in your stories. You never know who is interested in history, and we are all part of history. You don’t have to be a great novelist to jot down some of your personal history, and you don’t have to put your memories in chronological order. Just write down what you want, what was important, what happened, how you felt about it. For youngsters who never knew a world without Internet, computers, television or even radio, the way you used to live, the way you used to see the world, will be fascinating. Really.

Keep remembering, and keep reading.
