Reviews of Monsters in the Territory

Here are a few reviews of Monsters in the Territory, Book 2 in The Animal Guild Series, that have been posted on Amazon, Smashwords, LibraryThing and elsewhere. I am re-posting here with the reviewers' permission.

"Same fun characters are back plus a bunch of new ones. Follow along as the characters in the 233rd continue on their mission to try to find the 178th ... These books are not just quick reads. I love that they last awhile because I like being in their world." Feb. 24, 2015

"The suspense, drama, and intrigue continues!!! Going to look for the next one!!!" Feb. 15, 2015

"Watership Down fans will enjoy this saga. The animal characters are complex, the story exciting and the plot twists unexpected. Although this is the 2nd book in the series and I had not read the first, I enjoyed spending time in the magically exciting world of the Animal Guild." Oct. 30, 2014

"Engaging story. Fun interplay of animal personalities. Definitely a sequel, part of a series so must read the first book for this to make sense. Strongly recommend for older grade school to young adult." Nov. 8, 2014

"Monsters! That's right... Watch out! Wait till the monsters enter the story....oh how Sowle spins her tale!!" July 5, 2014

"A great addition to the Animal Guild Series. As in the first book, the characters are the key—terrifically well-drawn and engaging! The plot is exciting as well—full of suspense, action, excitement, all leavened with humor. Can't wait for the second volume of this trilogy to appear!" May 2014

"Fantasy fans, like myself, will love this! It has everything fantasy books need. Magic, fighting, mystery, strange creatures, strange world, intrigued and twisted plot. Not to mention the cute and adorable animals. Brought me in touch with my childhood again." Nov. 19, 2013

"In this second installment of The Animal Guild series, all our old friends are back, along with several intriguing newcomers.
When we last left Corto and Renard, the dog and fox's hard-won friendship was only beginning. It's two years later now, however, and a mysterious argument seems to have destroyed the friendship and enmity is thick between them. Or is it really? Their exchanges are reduced to petty snipping...but somehow they each seem to worry an inordinate amount when the other is in danger. And in this book, they're in danger a lot!
Corto is a general now, with Renard, a colonel, his second in command. We join the action as the 233rd, their guild, arrives in a new territory. Their goal is to figure out why the guild which was there before them disappeared and their exploration of the area leads them to some surprising discoveries.
My favorite of the new characters is a clumsy puppy named Hercules, who manages, with equal amounts of help and hindrance, to make a big impression on the guild in general and Renard in particular. Anyone who was ever young and unsure of themselves (all of us?) will be able to sympathize with this young dog.
No spoilers, but let's just say that the 'Monsters' in the title is appropriate! A fantasy element joins the book's exquisitely realistic attention to the natural world--well, realistic once you accept animals who can talk to each other! But even the fantastical aspects are well grounded in the natural world around us and the reader is in good hands.
My main quibble with the first book was difficulty in keeping track of all the characters, but I had less trouble in this outing. The old characters are well-established and the new characters are unique and essential to the plot. Everyone is sharply defined, and the world of the Animal Guild fully established.
The author says this book is the first of a trilogy within the main series and I'm very much looking forward to the next one coming out, because she wasn't kidding when she said this was a cliffie! At least we get a seek preview of the next book and it looks to be just as exciting as this one.
All in all, this delightful second story of the Animal Guild is sure to please everyone who loved the first one!" Sept. 23, 2013

"I loved this book and couldn't put it down! This book continues the story of the main characters from Animal Guild, but 2 years have passed since we last saw them. The story is engaging and fun, the characters are quirky (in a good way) with complex personalities and interactions. The suspense is suspenseful, and the cliffhanger ending is abrupt and tense. Definitely makes you want (no need) to read the next one! Some of my favorite characters from Animal Guild are back, with new scars, new friendships, and new rivalries. Renard and Corto have moved up in the command hierarchy, and have developed a mysterious feud (while still worrying about each other). Some sweet and lovable characters are introduced: Hercules pretty much defines adorable, and Fist is a perfect mix of innocent and worldly. Corto is brusque and prickly, Renard is world-weary and still far too trusting. Munk is his jolly self, Rethus is warm and loyal. Jered is aloof and casually cruel. There are so many more characters to come to know and love, I can't possibly list them all. What has happened to the missing guild? What are those monsters at the edge of guild territory? Will Renard and Corto ever be friends again? Read it to find out - you won't regret it!" Sept. 13, 2013
